Two Women Authors To Look Out For In 2017
Book lovers, especially the ones who like to read new authors, have much to rejoice for in the year 2017. There is a whole new crop of young authors getting a ‘publication’ to their thoughts. The subjects discussed in these books range from the joy of first love to complex topics like life as a homosexual in India, the thoughts and feelings of young widows, fantasy worlds and much more.
As an avid book reader, I’m going to talk here about recent books by two female authors that I’ll surely be tucking in with as soon as I can get my hands on them.
Here we go.
The High Priestess Never Marries by Sharanya Manivannan
This book questions the stereotypes around marriage. It is a collection of short stories. What excites me most about it is that it talks about the relatively lesser-known species of ‘single women'.
The author dwells on the novel concept of ‘happy’ single women, the many shackles that society binds them in and their struggle to explain to the world why it is normal to be alone and yet happy. Love, sex, relationships and marriage are all parts of the narrative.
Set in and around Chennai, this will also be a peek into the life of many orthodox Tamil families. Even if you do not know what the book is all about, the title itself makes it eye-catching and compelling to explore.
Pashmina by Nidhi Chanani
This one is a graphic novel. Yes, you read it right! Pashmina, written by Nidhi Chanani is most exciting for this reason.
Slated to release later this year, the story revolves around the life of an Indian-American teenager Priyanka who lives with her mother. It explores the mother-daughter relationship. It also elaborates on the issues that Indian immigrants face when they try to teach their American-born children about the Indian culture. The story may not seem totally new, but the graphic novel form sure is.
These young women authors seem to have created just the right buzz for their debut books. With topics and formats that are fresh, the books are poised for success. I am definitely reading them!
