Peekaboo is probably one of the earliest games a child learns to play. It is not only fun and exciting but also gives significant insight into the cognitive development of your child. This game has a lot of learning for both the child and the parent.

So the next time you’re wondering which game to play with your little one, just stick to peek-a-boo as it encourages your baby's senses, develops motor skills, supports visual tracing, boosts social change and pleases the sense of humor. What’s more, peekaboo instills object permanence- the idea that even when you can’t see something, it still exists.

When to start playing peekaboo: Children aren’t born with the knowledge of object permanence. The idea of object permanence develops in them at around 5 months of age, but babies of all age groups enjoy playing this game so you can start it as early as possible. Remember, that the level and ways of playing this game change with every age, for instance, playing peekaboo with a new-born baby would mean simply hiding behind the curtain and emerging out of it and repeating this cycle; you’ll notice your little one chuckle or stare in amazement.

How to play it: Almost any time your little one is wide-awake and alert, you can begin playing peekaboo or any other engaging game with him. This would help in the development of his brain. For newborn babies, play peekaboo by covering your face with hands or a curtain as newborns are captivated by faces. Watch for the startling reactions and cues your little one will give you. As your baby grows and begins to understand the game, try leveling up on peekaboo. For instance, you can hide his most favored toy behind a blanket and have him look for it.  Reward your child with nice gestures each time he is able to accomplish even the smallest things on his own.

Other Benefits Of Playing Peekaboo With Your Kid

Children learn to take turns.

Children learn to play in groups.

They learn to deal with conflict among participants.

Assists in developing problem-solving skills.

Understanding of the concept of volume.

Hide and seek assists in improving coordination and balance.

Quick Takeaway

Every physical activity involves a risk and peekaboo is no different. It’s imperative to set some ground rules such as demarking a safe ‘playing area’ that the children should restrict themselves to, prohibit climbing above a certain height and describing unsafe hiding places they should avoid. It’s also advisable to have a pre-decided signal for the end of the game just in case you’re not able to find your child who is hiding in a clever place. Also, look after the dress of your child as there are chances of a child bruising himself.  Lastly, the safest bet is to supervise your child while playing the game.

Thus, peekaboo is a fun and friendly game, integrated deeply in our culture. So what are you waiting for, pull up your socks, close your eyes & start counting to ten!
