DialABaker.com, a platform for Cooks and Bakers working-from-home provides a consolidated space for these professionals to showcase their delicacies. We speak to the person behind the venture today!

Tell us about yourself...
My name is Prita Dheer and I am the person behind DialABaker.com. I am a Housewife and Mother to two lovely grown-up daughters. I am also a Home Science graduate with postgraduate diploma in Commercial Art. I have been an Art and Craft teacher, made and sold Corporate gifts, started and grew a business dealing in birthday products and later disposable packaging.

How did the idea of DialABaker come about?
Through it all my interest in Baking and Cake decoration in particular grew. So much so that I went to Dubai to do the Wilton courses in making flowers (Basic and Advanced diplomas)! I then followed up with further courses here in Mumbai in fondant and cream. Even furnished a tiny Bakery Studio with all the gadgets and machines and colours and cutters and whatnot! Big oven, new fridge, even a Kenwood! Built up a nice library of books.

But an ailment I had been ignoring for long (and we housewives have a habit of doing that I am sure you will agree!) flared up. My hands have been trembling for long. But this past year my right hand has become worse. To the extent that I cannot make a cup of tea without the sugar and everything else spilling!

Anyway! To cut the story short, I then got connected to a wonderful group of Bakers on Facebook. I formed a WhatsApp group of Mumbai bakers. We met. What fun it was! I organized a bigger meet. 70 bakers turned up! Through all the fun and discussions one important point kept resurfacing. Lack of avenues for marketing their wonderful delicious products.

Soon after I was bed ridden for a month. Sitting on bed with nothing to do I started coming up with various ideas. Events, Bake sales, advertorials, and so on. Soon it was my anniversary and hubby dear was in Delhi! I wanted to order a cake for him to be delivered at his office. But I didn’t know any baker in Delhi. I definitely didn’t want to order through an impersonal Gift site. And I wanted our picture on it too!! And so the idea for DialABaker.com was born.

We are all about, Cooks and Bakers working at home with all their love and passion for the craft.

We have provided them a platform to show off their delicacies. And we have gifted the world the opportunity to taste it.

What is a typical day at work like for you?
At present it starts with following up with the agency developing the website…

What other plans do you have for yourself professionally in the future? Another venture? A job?
I have worked professionally designing toys and games, taught Art and Craft in schools, done windown displays and Visual Merchandising for showrooms and malls…out of these I would definitely like to continue with the designing of kid’s party games. Rest I have never really planned!

What else would you have liked to do based on your interests, if not this?
Product design!

What would you tell other women who are still exploring with the idea of starting a venture?
Do it, don’t over plan. One gets so overwhelmed by the sheer scale that you get scared to start.
