What Motivates Millennials At Work?
Changing jobs and dumping companies – is probably a norm among millennials. After working for two and a half years in the same company, I have lost the count of number of times people have asked me when I am changing my job.
I never have an answer to that particular question because I really don’t know when I want to switch. Apparently, it is a normal expectation out of us to change jobs every 6 months. But why do people quit jobs? This article in Fortune explains why people quit their jobs – money and lack of good leadership being the top reasons.
Is that really the case? Apart from money and good leadership, what makes us stick at a particular workplace? After speaking to quite a few people my age, I figured these three key factors that drive us millennials:
Purpose: Without a sense of purpose it would be hard to stick to a place for long. I need to be inclined to my company’s goals and mission to work there. The company’s mission has to be my mission. It could be anything but until I don’t believe in it, I can’t imagine myself working there.
Passion: We need to feel passionate about what we are doing. We need to do what we love and love what we do. Everything else drains our energy. This generalization comes after tons of conversations with friends, wish I could provide some data here (will leave that for the next article)
Continuous challenge: What’s life without challenges? BORING? MEANINGLESS? I would run a mile from a place that doesn’t challenge me. That’s exactly what drives our lot – challenges. It is a circle – we can’t learn and grow without challenges. As long as a company throw’s challenges at me and I am learning – I will stick around.
