Colony uncles and aunties: “Beta bade ho kar kya banna chahte hain aap?”

Me: *Confused!*

This classic question has been put up to every kid. I will be damned, if I knew the correct answer to this. While growing up, I was consumed by my passion to become a Bharatnatyam danseuse. Took training as well, but, over the time the passion fizzled out.

Few years down the line, I now wanted to become a nutritionist. Read and undertook courses for that too. Again after a while, I simply spaced out of that zone.

My peers and family labelled me a wanderer. Someone who’s unsure of their true calling in life. The underlying observation was I lacked focus. Naturally I took this to heart, and started introspecting real hard; what was my true calling after all.

I realised, it is writing. But, after coming across this eye-opening TEDTalk by Emilie Wapnick, a writer and artist, it really doesn’t bother me now whether I am following my ultimate passion or not.

Why can’t I be free-flowing and dynamic? Why can’t I be a person with multiple passions? Why do I have to fit into a boxed idea of a career?

There are a lot of things that excites me. Is something wrong with it?

Can you relate with this?

Congratulations, we’re Multipotentialites :)

The concept we are fed from our childhood is that; we are ‘destined’ to do that one great thing.

Nothing wrong with that. Again, having multiple passions and dabbling in it is not a limitation. Contrary to that, anything you learn can be put into use.

I have put into use my years of learning Bharatnatyam, in grasping the importance of creating harmony with your inner self and external forces.

Emilie has listed valid points in support of a multipotentialite. Check out the video below to understand what are the benefits of being a multipotentialite.

Mastering the depth of a stream, is one way to pursue your career. Engaging with the breadth is another way. Not all of us are wired in a similar manner. Feeling stagnated after a point in your work, is totally legit. Nothing wrong with exploring different passions.

Maybe you’re not destined to become an expert. Maybe you’re working towards becoming multi-talented, in becoming a multipotentialite with varied avenues in life.
