How Contributing to Your Company’s Blog Can Increase Your Visibility
Blogging has certainly gained momentum in the last twenty years or so. The word ‘blog’ originated around May’99 when Peter Merholz jokingly split the official word ‘Weblog’ (that was used to describe individual web posts) into the phrase ‘We Blog’ in the sidebar of his own blog, peterme.com.
Trivia apart, blogging has become a powerful tool in recent times. Individuals, companies, businesses, travel enthusiasts, adventure seekers, food connoisseurs…everyone is blogging. Companies post blogs both for internal and external consumption and many employees have now started contributing towards these blogs.
If you are still contemplating whether or not to contribute to your company’s blog, here are some reasons why you should.
Mind with matter
Contributing to a blog as an employee would imply that you are knowledgeable about your subject and you are willing to share it with others. The logical extension of blogging is participation in webinars, group discussions and forums where general or specific discussions are held. Participating in these will increase your visibility big time and you will soon be perceived as an ‘expert’ in your field.
Leveraging both internal and external stakeholders
A blog is a medium that reaches out to both internal and external stakeholders. Whether you write work-specific blogs or a blog on personal experience, it will definitely reach out to a wide set of individuals. Once you are known as a blogger, you will never fall short of topics to strike a conversation with anyone from the company. These can definitely be fruitful for your career in the long run.
It showcases your multiple qualities
A blog appropriately exhibits your thoughts, intellect and knowledge. Moreover, if you have an impressive writing style, chances are that your name and work will register in the minds of your colleagues. Impressive writing can also help you get involved in many other company related projects that require good writing skills like social media bytes, newsletters etc.
It looks good on your CV!
Being a good blogger is an added attraction on your resume. Since the concept relies heavily on the credibility you build through your writing, it will be an interesting addition to your resume. This will undoubtedly impress the interviewer.
Blogging is therapeutic too. It gives you an outlet to express your thoughts and ideas, and in the process helps widen your perspectives. It is an evolutionary process, and hence must be attempted at least once by everyone.
