Job interviews make me nervous. Primarily, because at the end of every interaction, I have to talk money. There are numerous questions I ask myself: What is a reasonable sum that I can ask for with absolute conviction? Should I indicate a range or specify the exact figure? Should I pretend to be naïve and wait for the other person to arrive at a figure? Talking money makes me uncomfortable. Does that happen to you too?

I have always found myself picking silence over comfort. Because nobody else around me was talking about it either. Let me correct that: few women were talking about money. My male acquaintances, on the other hand, I’ve learnt, are far more aggressive when talking and negotiating money. Privilege is often best measured when considering one’s ability to demand a raise. Just as women don’t apply for jobs unless they’re 100% qualified, they are also more reticent than men to negotiate their salary offers.

For something which, ideally is just a means to satisfaction and leading a better life, the concept of money seems to have evolved into a power-play of sorts. Shrouded in opacity and utmost secrecy. With sealed lips and encrypted salary slips.
