#GenderEquality: Wonder Woman Loses UN Brand Ambassadorship

The upcoming Wonder Woman, set to release on 2 June, 2017 has generated a lot of excitement among the DC comics fans. Wonder Woman’s introduction scene, in the highly anticipated and extremely disappointing, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, was considered to be the high point of the movie.



On the occasion of Wonder Woman’s 75th anniversary UN announced the DC comics character, as the honorary brand ambassador for empowerment of women and girls.

But the move didn’t get any support and received backlash from the very beginning. A  petition created by “Concerned United Nations staff members”  points out that:-



“Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent “warrior” woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character’s current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring bodysuit with an American flag motif and knee high boots –the epitome of a “pin-up” girl.”



The bone of contention here was, appointing an overtly sexualized image as a brand ambassador sends out a wrong message. Especially, when the headline news in United States and the world is the objectification of women and girls.



Keeping in view with the backlash, the UN has concluded the honorary brand ambassadorship of Wonder Woman to promote gender equality.  


The decision to end the Wonder Woman campaign by UN is welcomed by many of its critics.



At a time when  women are forced to dress down at a beach this seems quite a contrasting step. The question remains, how much is too much?
