Are you a new mother weaning your child? Confused about what your child should eat and when? Try these tested tips to provide good nutrition to your child.

Why eating the wrong combination is harmful to health?

Wrong food combinations can cause havoc in your child’s digestive system. These wrong combinations can cause a digestive overload and foods of different tastes and post-digestive effects can create toxins in the system. These foods eaten separately can be very good for you and yield a lot of energy. But in the wrong combination, these foods can create gas, putrefaction, and fermentation.

There are times when my baby used to cry uncontrollably and apparently with no obvious reason. All my efforts to settle her down used to go in vain. Long hours trying to soothe her led me to try and find out what was the cause of this problem. After a long discussion with a friend who specializes in Ayurveda, I was astonished to learn that it was my feeding pattern that was disruptive to my child’s digestive system!

Which food combinations are never to be eaten together?

You will be surprised that the food combinations that seem perfect are the ones that are causing the maximum harm.

  • Bananas and milk are contraindicated as the sweet milk reacts with the sour fruit to cause indigestion.
  • Melons are diuretic while milk is a laxative and should never be consumed together.
  • Beans and milk or other dairy products are also a potentially harmful combination.
  • Eggs and yogurt can also cause indigestion.
  • Fruits should never be combined with cereals or milk.
  • Honey and ghee in equal amounts should never be consumed together as they can upset the balance of the body.
  • Hot and cold drinks should not be paired together. For example, do not let your child drink water immediately after drinking hot milk.
  • Lemons in combination with yogurt, milk, tomatoes and cucumbers can cause bloating.
  • The most common mistake is feeding your baby milk and bread together. Milk is not a great combination with the yeast in the bread and can cause gas.
  • Tapioca or “Sabudana” is a favorite of most mothers. It should never be fed along with fruits, especially mangoes, and bananas.
  • Yogurt is also best avoided in a combination with milk, fruits, cheese, fish, and other hot dishes.

This list is not exhaustive but includes the common combinations that I feed my child on a daily basis. I breathed a sigh of relief once I was able to pinpoint the cause of my baby’s distress. The Ayurveda way might be contradictory to what many doctors and child care experts believe, but it has reduced the number of crying jags in my child. She is happier and healthier and the medicine box is hardly opened now. The digestive system is the base of a child’s health. I firmly believe that most ailments are spawned by the food we eat. Eat healthily and feed your baby smartly for a long lasting impact on her health.
