Cricket seems to be the most popular game in the world today. Not only men, even women have proved themselves to be expert big cricket players bringing glory to the nation. This article will speak about a few famous Indian women cricket players who did their best in their job and proved that women were never lesser than men.

Diana Fram Eduji

The Mumbai girl Diana Fram Eduji grew up playing cricket in the railway colony. She was born on 26th January 1956.  Before coming to cricket, she used to play tennis and basketball.  She was a left-hand bowler and played for the first time for Indian women’s cricket team in 1975.  Within three years she succeeded to become the captain of the Indian women’s cricket team. In 1993, the Government of India honoured her with the greatest achievement of sports named as the ‘Arjuna Award.’ She also obtained the Padma Shri award in 2002.  She is known as the greatest women cricketer from India.

 

Shantha Rangaswamy

Shantha Rangaswamy the 3rd child among 6 sisters was the first women in the Indian cricket team to make a century in 1977. She was a right-handed batswoman and was the best performer in the women’s cricket world cup in 1982. She scored 750 runs in her 16 test matches.  In 19 ODIs, this sports lady took 12 wickets and 287 runs in 15.1.  This first women century maker was awarded the greatest sports award, ‘The Arjuna Award’ in 1976. Presently she works as a cricket writer by profession.

 

Shubhangi Kulkarni 

Shubhangi Kulkarni was a leg spinner women cricketer in the Indian Women’s cricket team. She initially played nationally for the Maharashtra domestic team and played internationally for the first time in the women’s team of India against West Indies in 1976.   This lady cricketer played 2 matches in women’s world cup of 1978, 12 matches in 1982, 6 matches in 1988 and 3 matches in 1986. She was the captain of the team for 3 test matches and one ODI match. She works in the ICC women’s cricket committee at present.

 

Purnima Rau

Born in 1967, Purnima Rao a Hyderabad girl is a former Indian women cricketer played 5 test matches and 33 ODI matches for India. She was the captain for one domestic match and also for 3 test and 8 ODI matches. This great cricketer was an all rounder. Because she was a perfect batsman and at the same time, an excellent bowler too.

 

Anju Jain

Anju Jain was the only women player to play for 4 continuous world cups. She is the 4th best wicket keeper in the world. This Delhi girl played 8 test matches and 65 ODI matches for Indian women cricket team. She was known because of her wicket-keeping records.  She was also the captain for 8 ODI matches.  Domestically she played for the Air India’s women team. She was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2005.  Currently, she is working as the cricket coach for the state of Assam.

 

Anjum Chopra 

Anjum Chopra started playing cricket at the age of 9.  She also played in her college days. Initially, she was selected to play domestically by the Delhi cricket team.  She was not only a cricketer but at the same time she was a perfect sports girl who knew swimming and basketball also. She also played for Delhi’s basketball team.     When she was 17, she made her first debut in the ODI. This cricketer was a right-handed bowler and a left-handed batswoman. She became ‘the player of the series’ in the second series played by her. She is a multi-talented person who is an author, a sports star, a speaker and also an actor.

 

Mithali Raj

The Tamil girl Mithali Raj joined the Indian Woman’s cricket team at the early age of 17 years.  She made her first debut in the year 1999 against Ireland. In her first debut itself, she scored 114 runs. She did the world’s highest test score of 214 runs against 209 scored by Karen Rolton. During the world cup of 2002, she fell ill due to typhoid. But she participated in the World cup of 2005. She was the captain of the Indian team during world cup of 2005. She is an excellent batswoman and a great part-time bowler. This great cricketer was the 2nd person to score 5000 runs in the ODI women’s cricket.  This great sports person was honored by the government of India, ‘the Arjuna Award’ in 2003. She was named as the No.1 Cricketer in the ODI chart.

 

Jhulan Nishit Goswami 

Jhulan Nishit Goswami the Bengali girl is a woman cricketer who plays in the Indian women’s cricket team, Asia Women’s team, Bengal women as well as east zone women. She was born on 25th November 1982. She is a perfect cricketer with excellent batting and bowling capacity.  In 2007 she was awarded the ICC Women’s player of the year. This sports girl was also awarded the best women cricketer in 2011. She was the captain of the Indian women cricket team in 2009. Today she is the best bowler in the ICC women’s cricket. She has proved herself to be the 2nd fastest women bowler in the world.
