Swedish nuclear physicist, Elina Berglund fought against the government for over a year for her app Natural Cycles. Now her app is the first in the world to be approved for contraception by the government and doctors.

"It is incredibly exciting that there is now an approved alternative to traditional birth control and that you can use technology to replace medication," says Elina Berglund, who along with her husband Raoul Scherwizl founded the Natural Cycles.

We are pretty familiar with period tracking apps. But could we imagine an app replace the contraceptive pill?

Well, it looks like it. Natural Cycles is first app classified as a medical device for contraception.
 

How it works?
 

The app works by women taking the temperature under the tongue first thing every morning with additional data such as period, sex and LH test results into the app.

An uniquely developed algorithm then analyses your temperature, period and ovulation to determines if you are fertile the day and should use contraception, which lets you know if you could get pregnant during unprotected intercourse.

Daily fertility status can be checked. A green day means you're not fertile and cannot get pregnant while a red day means that you're likely to be fertile and should use protection.

Natural Cycles goes beyond contraception by offering a ‘Plan a pregnancy’ mode which allows you to know when you're most fertile.
 

A research by  the Karolinska Institute, Sweden’s found the app is as effective as the contraceptive pill at preventing pregnancy, without any of the side effects.
 

Natural Cycles is a paid app and has over 150,000 users in 161 countries and is clinically tested to be 99.5% effective.
 

There's no denying the fact that contraceptive pills have liberated women since the time they were introduced was introduced. It may also have health benefits and If taken correctly it is more than 99 percent effective.


But for those far more affected than the others by the side effects of contraceptives, an alternative choice like the Natural Cycles app could prove to be a blessing.
