"In two weeks, he would’ve turned 33,” says Sunayana Dumala, the bereaved wife of Srinivas Kuchibhotla, who was shot dead by an American at a Kansas bar.

For Sunayana, the senseless violence has left her family destroyed.

“I have a question in my mind: Do we belong?”, The Kansas City Star quoted her as saying, as she recalls reading newspapers reports about some indiscriminate shooting or the other.

She used to wonder if it was safe to continue living in the United States. But Srinivas always assured her that “only good things happen to good people.” It’s a devastating tragedy then that Srinivas’ faith was betrayed.

In the same press conference, Sunayana said they had moved to the USA to follow their American dream. They had recently bought their first house and Srinivas had painted the walls of the living room himself.

They had been planning a family.

Sunayana now demands answers from the US government and wants to know what it will do to stop hate crimes against minorities.

The accused, Adam Purinton, was arrested on Thursday morning, five hours after the incident.

He was caught at a bar in Missouri where he reportedly told the bartender he had just killed two Middle Eastern men.
