It takes a lot of grit and determination to get back up when you fall in the dark situations that life puts you through. Defying such odds is Lakshmi Prabha, who survived a major road accident and recovered from one of the worst phases in her life.

"Women have different reasons to take a break from their careers, owing to the phases we go through. But my reason was unlike the most common ones.

I was a software professional and worked for different companies on various platforms. Naturally, these assignments spanned over many years and countries like UK, Singapore and USA. I seemed to have performed well in my job and acquired a lot of appreciations too. The last job I had was with HP in California, USA when I met with a horrendous road accident which pushed me in a coma for 4 months.

When I gained consciousness after 4 months, my family went into a greater shock - I had amnesia and short-term memory loss along with a lot of fractures and a drooping eyelid. On further surgery, the same eye suffered Diplopia or double vision. The list of fractures included head-injury and major fractures in neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, pelvis, tibia and fibula. It might be easier to understand the extent of these fractures if I simply tell you that the right side of my body is reconstructed with a lot of hardware.

After being discharged from the hospital, it was a slow and gradual recovery - from being bed-ridden to being on a wheelchair, from taking help of a walker to being assisted by a walking-cane. Every day of my life had been a continuous process to come to this current stage. My husband and daughter were my biggest supporters and helped me recover without losing hope.

With my prevailing health conditions, I have learnt to live with what I have. But to derive the purpose of my re-birth in life, I was determined to help the world in some way or the other. I developed an app, ShiShu, that is designed to help pregnant women from day one to the day of their delivery. It is a network of patients, doctors and nurses who keep in touch through this app, to facilitate a stress free pregnancy for the patient.
