Career Resource - I am a Teacher
“The status of the teacher reflects the socio-cultural ethos of a society; it is said that no people can rise above the level of its teachers.” The National Policy on Education, 1986
It is imperative that we prepare our teachers to build a new India of our dreams. If we want to effect any fundamental change in the education system, it has to begin at the level of teachers.
I am a Teacher has taken the initiative to build passionate, caring and skilled teachers of the country and have committed themselves to bring about the much needed change in the space of teacher education. They have been inspired to roll out a unique high - quality teacher education program that creates a cohort of driven, passionate teachers who are motivated to lead change in and through classrooms.
I am a Teacher is a not for profit organization, launching Post Graduate Diploma in Learning and Teaching – a one of its kind year long residency based teacher education programme commencing in June 2015. For this programme, they partnered with some of the most credible organizations in the field of education and teacher education. The Heritage school, Gurgaon will host the first residency, Jodo Gyan (NGO), India and the Boston Teacher Residency, U.S.A. are academic partners in this endeavour.
As a resident in this programme, teachers spend a whole year in classrooms teaching alongside mentor teachers. They are mentored and guided throughout the programme by an experienced teacher educator. Besides classroom practice, they have course work through the year that helps them integrate theory and practice. This model has the potential to transform and reinvent teacher education in the country and thus reform school education.
The objective is to set up a working model in one context and enable setting up of residencies across the nation. The aim is it to be a disruptive force in the teacher education field and fundamentally transform our classrooms and schools.
