Be Vacation Ready Not Vacation Deprived
Now that’s a bummer! Are we really vacation-deprived souls? Well, the last time, I went for a vacation was a year and a half back, so basically I did not venture out of my city since.
Not because I don’t like travelling, but it just didn’t figure in my to-do list. Again the 9-to-5 grind, life routine, and the fleeting moments of relaxation, takes up majority of my focus.
Vacations are quintessential for getting our life back from routine chaos to a standstill and rejuvenate. We are a bunch of overworked people.
According to Expedia 'Vacation Deprivation report 2016, following Spain (68 per cent), UAE (68 per cent), Malaysia (67 per cent) and South Korea (64 per cent), India is ranked as the fourth most vacation deprived country globally.
The study was conducted among 7,855 individuals across 24 countries. After Thailand, Indians cancel vacations the most due to work commitments.
We have done this at some point in our lives, cancelled our vacations because of work emergency or even worse, checking our mails, wrapping up ‘leftover’ work or attending important calls during our holidays.
This is sad! We end up being mechanical and waste away our time out from work.
So, refrain yourself from reaching out to that phone on your armrest, switch off that laptop and bury it somewhere in the closet.
Go holiday mode, with these tips:-
Keep your communication to bare minimum
Drop in a mail to your team and boss, mentioning clearly that you will not be available for communication or any work, during your vacationing days. Be crystal clear about your involvement during those days and stick to it as religiously as you do to your work commitments.
Be available on emergency contact
Don’t leave your teammates high & dry. Furnish your emergency contact details or divert your alerts to text or mail. Choose an emergency contact medium and be strict about its usage. Don’t entertain regular work calls or other such work demands.
Complete your tasks beforehand
Make sure you haven’t kept any impending work when you’re heading for a relaxing break. That is the biggest mood spoiler, working even when you’re supposed to relax. Just don’t leave any loose ends. Complete your projects and more importantly, do not take up anything new.
Delegate work to your team members
Delegate your responsibilities among your team members and ask them to coordinate accordingly. Make sure that a system is in place, which in turn will make sure that the work is not affected. Remember, you can’t control everything, in fact, that would not be fruitful for your team and the organization.
Finally, just pack your bags and leave!
Enough with the work, soak in the sun, lie down on the beach or trek snowy terrains, camp amidst nature or indulge in luxurious holiday destinations.
Take the much-needed break from your schedule and go on a holiday mode!
