It's the holiday season, the seaon of joy. There's an unmistable spirit of celebration in the air that is synonymous with December. With the holidays round the corner this is the time to mingle with family and close friends. One of the most relaxing, time trusted ways to do so - watch a good family movie snuggled together.
Here is a potpourri of (International, Hindi, and a Bengali) movies for you to watch and enjoy this holiday season. Most of these movies talk about women and the different roles they play. These movies also show the intricacies of female characters and their minds.
Monalisa Smiles (Language- English, Year-2003, Trailer): Set in the 1950's this movie asks women to question their traditional roles; a situation which is still valid for women, more so for women in India. It's a nice narrative on women who are realizing change in their society, women who are looking to take up more roles in life. Any working woman will out and out connect with this movie and will love to watch this with her family. Starring Julia Roberts, Monalisa Smiles could be a great way to begin your movie marathon.
Julie and Julia (Language-English, Year- 2009; Trailer): Julie is bored with her job and she hates it, she is not so successful like her friends and she has moved to a new place with not enough space for her elaborate cooking. She finds happiness in cooking and she starts recreating all the recipes from Julia Child's famous cook book. Along the way, the movie explores the life journey of both Julie and Julia, set in different time periods. This movie is very inspiring, and if you are a foodie you will love this movie throughout.
Inside Out: (Language – English, Year-2015, Trailer): This is a story of an 11 year old and what happens to her emotions when she gets uprooted to a new city. Her emotions - joy, fear, anger, disgust and sadness are portrayed. This is also a movie anybody who has moved cities or homes can connect to.
Piku: (Language – Hindi, Year – 2015, Trailer): As we grow up to be independent individuals we slowly slip into a more supportive role when it comes to our parents. In the movie, Piku is a daughter all of us can connect with. This low budget not-so-hyped movie has created waves among Indian audiences this year. This is a feel good movie that you can watch when you are together with your family.
Titli (Language - Bengali, Year – 2002, Movie Clip): A mothers roles is always a challenging one. Titli is a very touching movie where the main characters are played by Bengal's eminent actors and mother and daughter duo – Aparna Sen and Konkona Sen Sharma. Titli is among the first few films starring Konkona. Aparna Sen does justice to the role of a friendly mother who guides her daughter through “fandom” and through the by-lanes of her past life.
