Today’s woman is a go getter in her professional and personal capacity. She represents the power of bringing home the dough and baking it too. While some women have the support and structure to plan their professional and personal life, some might be unwittingly overlooking the basics of staying healthy in this daily rush.
Ruchira Patel, a stay-at-home mom found an excellent opportunity for a comeback into the corporate world. It was quite a chug to manage both her teenaged kids’ schedules, home and a 30-hour work week. Despite her best efforts to stay healthy, she found that she had gained 8 kilos in 6 months after joining work. The truth is, stay-at-home sometimes means more physical activity as one is not chained to a chair the whole day!
Ruchira got her health mojo back after careful consideration of all aspects of her lifestyle. She shared some simple and consistent tips that helped her in the long run.
-
Start unwinding an hour before bedtime. Keep electronic devices away. Avoid blue light from electronic devices like cell phones, tablets, e-readers etc. Because this disturbs the body’s natural circadian rhythms which affect sleep cycles.
-
Sip water instead of aerated sodas. Make water your stress buster. Keep a glass of water at your workstation for intermittent sips. Add a dash of lime, cloves, mint or tulsi leaves to your container for some flavour.
-
Replace sugary beverages with green tea. Green tea is the healthiest beverage on the planet. It is loaded with antioxidants and various substances that are beneficial for overall health. It also increases fat burning ability and helps you lose weight.
- Avoid constant messaging and reading on cellular gadgets. This habit makes one sedentary that leads to cardiovascular or back pain issues.
- Get enough sunlight – Most Indian women get thumbs down in their Vitamin D reports. Being Indians, we have plenty of sunshine to draw from, let alone bask. Moderate noon sunlight elevates the immune system and helps with depression that can be aggravated by sitting indoors all day long.
-
Break exercise into small doses – Commuting and work-life balance barely leaves us with time to breathe, let alone sweat it out in the gym. Use office hours instead. Take a break after every one hour for 10 minutes and walk around. Stretch, if possible. Use the staircase instead of the elevator. Start incorporating 30 minutes of normal or brisk walk every day.
Healthy living is no longer just a dream. All you need to do is open out a bit of space in your window of obligations, and find an hour to focus on yourself. Begin by creating goals you find doable and gradually build towards a commitment.
