Congress leader P Chidambaram said, on 11 March, that the BJP’s massive poll victories in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand were testament of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal.
The BJP swept the Uttar Pradesh polls for the first time in 14 years. “The recent assembly election results have established that PM Modi is the most dominant person in the country,” Chidambaram said, adding, “Modi has a country-wide appeal”.

The veteran leader also said that the BJP will have a majority in the Rajya Sabha when elections for the Upper House of the Parliament are held.
The victory is also being perceived to be a referendum on the Modi government’s demonetisation initiative. Chidambaram, however, begs to differ. “We can’t have simplistic conclusions like UP vote was in favour of demonetisation, can’t say it was a referendum (on note ban),” he told PTI.
