New Age #FutureOfWork - #WorkFromHome

I have met the founder of the company I work for, once.

The person I report to, I have never even seen.

I work all day, every day, from 8 am to 6 pm, and as and when needed before/after those hours.

I am (and have been) a work-from-home employee for years!

Welcome to the future of work, where remote employment has started gaining major attention.

If you look at the structure of the work-from-home concept, it is similar to what BPO’s (and even IT companies) would observe. They work in shifts to accommodate the timings required by the employer or the clients who were (in a lot of cases) abroad. While it can be argued that multinational companies, in general, observe this too, the differentiator is that a lot of successful freelancers have worked the same route to bag international projects, thereby making work-from-home a more popular concept.

So what’s the similarity? The employee and the employer may not even be in the same country, leave alone cities.

Why do you feel #WorkFromHome as a concept is gaining popularity? Read more about it here.

Closer home, a rise in the number of people choosing to work from home is usually due to:

Personal issues: Such as, having a young child with no one to attend to him/her could be a key reason why there are more work-from-home applicants today. The rise of better and faster internet also helps this concept well. As long as you are connected, you can work.

Location problems: Imagine the well-educated wife of an army officer in India, roaming around smaller towns because of her husband’s posting. Had it not been for the option to work from home, the talent held by these individuals would be lost.

Health issues: A regular ghost-blogger paired up with three different companies and charged a retainer on a monthly basis to write blogs for them. She was suffering from Stage-I Leukemia and couldn’t always be at the workplace physically, and so ensured she earned a living while getting treatment--by working from home.

Second Innings: Some employees choose to work from home after their retirement as consultants. There are introverts who thrive when they work alone, but their productivity is affected when they work in a formal setting. In such cases too, working from home helps both the employee and the organisation.

Can you find any role to work from home?

Sometimes with a lower pay, but yes.

Can you find a role across industries?

In most cases, yes.

You need to look a little harder to get the right fit, that’s all.

What can help is talking to companies and networking before you make a decision.

Work-from-home is still a nascent concept. While companies are slowly opening up to the idea, most still prefer having in-house full-time employees, even if the role could be given to a professional working remotely.

Either way, look a little harder and you’ll always get what you are looking for!
