“People don’t leave an organization, they leave their bosses.” This is an oft-quoted saying.
A good rapport with your boss can help with your career growth, while a constant difference of opinion or a boss who doesn’t share credit with you can make your life miserable. However, should your boss be your reason for quitting the job?
Ideally, it shouldn’t be so. I believe that we shouldn’t let anyone else take charge of our life. If your job and work are equally promising, why should you let your boss disturb your peace of mind? I agree, constant conflict with your boss does indeed spoil your day. Being a corporate IT professional, I’ve experienced it too.
However, does quitting a job guarantee that you won’t encounter such people or bosses at your new workplace? Further, bosses keep changing and the frustration you are experiencing now could be temporary.
I would therefore like to share a small checklist that helps me overcome frustration whenever I have a difficult time at office.
Introspect
Before making such an important decision of your life, introspect. Try to understand if it’s only you who’s having trouble or are others experiencing this as well? Are you over-reacting? Do you feel that your boss doesn’t value your work? Most importantly, can you make the situation better, in any way?
Count your blessings
Count all the positive things about your workplace and your job. Do you feel a sense of satisfaction from your work? Is your job adding value to your life? Do you love your job? Did you say yes? Don’t quit just yet then.
People have different ways of working. Adapt!
We are all different and have our own ways of working. Some might be perfectionists, some process-oriented and some people-oriented. Try to understand your boss’ way of working and manage the disagreement. If you feel your way or idea is better, put it up as a suggestion and ask for his/her feedback. If the boss doesn’t even consider your ideas, then he/she boss is being unprofessional. You may then need to consider quitting.
Plan wisely
If you feel stuck even after trying all these suggestions, you should definitely quit. However, plan it wisely. Get a new job first and then quit.
A good career helps us in building a better future for ourselves. So, take a deep breath and think before you quit!
