Many people will think about kicking up their cushy 9 to 5 job to pursue their dream but not many will end up doing it! Those who do deserve their share of accolade! Shifa Mahajan, a young artist who quit her job to pursue her dream of ‘creating’ has found her own niche. She creates unique designs on various mediums and there is no stopping her from painting the town in myriad hues!
Let’s hear her story,
What line of work are you in?
I am into fine arts. Apart from canvas paintings, I explore different mediums and canvasses. From merchandising to walls, from cars to electricity poles, from ceramics to phone cases, I’ve played with many objects for my art endeavours.
What inspired you to enter this field of work?
I was always fond of painting, but corporate monotony and dampening growth of fine arts in Punjab made me resign from pension and strive for my passion.
How do you balance your personal and professional life?
Since my form of work gives me a little leverage to work at my own timings, it rarely affects my personal life. Also, my family is supportive of my passion, and understands my absence, if any. Apart from this, coming from a management background, prioritising and being meticulous about daily plans help me chalk out my goals in a better way.
What are your short term job / entrepreneurial plans?
I am currently pursuing PhD (Doctorate of Philosophy) under which I am looking forward to research on Art Market existing in Punjab and aim to contribute to the body of knowledge by making Art a profession which earns both money and respect to the budding Picassos.
What advice would you give young working women today?
Apart from talent, work acumen and household chores, I feel it is imperative to read. Quality reading enhances the perspective and makes you a stronger human. I sense the lack of contemporary knowledge in our education system has made the women entrepreneurs weaker in terms of exposure to real time markets.
Where are you from and where are you currently based today?
I have my roots in Chandigarh. After a short stint in Pune for higher education and corporate work, I am back to the city and I look forward to painting the bricks of the town in myriad hues in times to come!
