Single moms going strong!

Being single mother is difficult, but meet these strong single mothers who made it seems so easy. So, here's how to be a good single mother!

"I'm here to tell you that you are your entire world. Though we all look for companionship, I don't know why we are led to believe that only a man can provide us with that and make our life "whole". Find what completes you and stick to it.”

Moksha Jetley, aged 53, not only says these words, but fearlessly showed the world that her daughter Prachi and adventure bike riding are what make her a complete woman.Today, Moksha Jetley is simply known as a single mother who rides a bullet and successfully runs Bike ‘N’ Beyond, a biking tour company for foreign tourists. Based out of Himachal Pradesh, Bike N Beyond organizes bike trips in North and South India at very economical rates.

There are many other single mothers who have dared to break the unconventional, only to emerge stronger. In between balancing their emotional upheaval, single parenthood status, home and career, they have passionately pursued their dreams.

Simar Sukhija, after separating from her spouse, took the responsibility of being a single mother in her stride. She went on to open three nail art boutiques under the brand ‘Simar’s Nail Bar’. At the same time, she also plays the role of a father. She says, “As a rule, I plan an adventure cum recreational trip with Samaira every year. I don't want her to miss out on anything that she could have done with her father.”

In some cases, a single mother finds strength from her family to raise her child. But, there are women like Sheetal, who were not so lucky. Her father had just retired as a junior government officer when she turned to him with a 5 year old son, after her husband’s death. “I realized that without a career skill, there is no way I could earn a living for my family. I enrolled for a diploma course in customer relationship management with whatever little savings my husband had left. Luckily, I got hired as a customer service manager at a lifestyle store, within a month after the completion of the course,” says Sheetal.

Do these single working mothers feel the need to find another life partner, at least for the sake of the child? “Actually, no,” believes Cheryl, a mother of a 12 year old daughter who is currently going through a divorce. “I have had my bouts of despair, but I find my respite in self-help books and comic television shows. I am a natural painter and planning to start painting workshops for children soon. My daughter understands my situation and supports my decision.”

We also have the likes of Sushmita Sen, who became a single mother by choice after adopting two gorgeous girls.

With their sheer determination and positive attitude, these single mothers are making the best of their lives!
