Do you know why women from the Sikh community have a ‘Kaur’ in their name?
The tenth guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, made it mandatory for Sikh women to use the name ‘Kaur’ and for Sikh males to use the name ‘Singh.’
The Kaur Project documents and celebrates the new generation of ‘Kaurs’ who are making a mark around the world in their various roles as teachers, lawyers, artists, entrepreneurs, doctors and filmmakers, to name a few.
The project, the brainchild of Saji Kaur Sahota and Jessie Kaur Lehail, from British Columbia, Canada, has the tagline: Every Kaur Has A Story. We Want To Hear Yours.
While Sahota photographs the women, Lehail interviews them over the phone, The Huffington Post reported.
“How do you identify yourself as a Kaur” and “tell us about your journey so far” are among the series of questions that the two ask these women.
